Bed and Bed Frame Buying Guide
Fast answer: Choose the mattress size first, then compare bed frames by room footprint, sleeping capacity, storage, mattress support and material. Use the assembled furniture dimensions—not mattress dimensions alone—and verify every product-specific requirement before ordering.
Choose a Bed Type for the Room
The right bed frame should solve the room’s main need before it adds a particular finish or style. Decide whether the priority is a standard sleeping surface, more sleeping capacity, integrated storage or a design that changes how floor space is used.
| Bed type | Primary use | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Platform, panel and upholstered beds | A conventional single-level bed in a range of frame and headboard styles. | Overall footprint, headboard height, slats, center support and whether a foundation is required. |
| Bunk beds, loft beds and beds with stairs | Vertical layouts that add sleeping surfaces or usable space below an elevated bed. | Mattress sizes, overall height, ceiling clearance, access, upper-mattress limits and each sleeping surface’s capacity. |
| Storage, captain’s and bookcase beds | Drawers, cubbies or cabinets integrated into the base, headboard or surrounding pieces. | Included versus optional components, opening clearance, usable storage and whether the layout is reversible. |
| Trundle beds and daybeds | A pullout sleeping or storage unit, often paired with a wall-oriented or three-sided frame. | Trundle purpose, mattress size and thickness, rollout clearance and whether a mattress is included. |
| Murphy and cabinet beds | A sleeping surface that closes into a cabinet or wall-oriented unit when not in use. | Open and closed dimensions, operating clearance, mattress requirements, anchoring and assembly instructions. |
| Theme beds and toddler beds | Child-focused designs with decorative forms, lower profiles or specialized features. | Required mattress, age and weight guidance, rail configuration and manufacturer instructions. |
Twin, Full, Queen and King Beds: Common Mattress Sizes
Mattress size describes the sleeping surface, not the exterior size of the bed frame. Headboards, footboards, posts, upholstery, storage and stairs can make the assembled furniture wider, longer or taller. The following are common nominal U.S. mattress dimensions; verify the selected bed and mattress specifications.
| Size | Common dimensions | Shop beds |
|---|---|---|
| Twin | Approximately 38" W × 75" L | Twin beds |
| Twin XL | Approximately 38" W × 80" L | Twin and full beds |
| Full | Approximately 54" W × 75" L | Full beds |
| Queen | Approximately 60" W × 80" L | Queen beds and queen bed frames |
| King | Approximately 76" W × 80" L | King beds and king bed frames |
| California king | Approximately 72" W × 84" L | California king beds |
Wooden Bed Frames, Metal Bed Frames and Upholstered Beds
Material affects appearance, care and construction, but it does not by itself determine capacity or mattress support. Wooden beds and wooden bed frames may use solid wood, engineered wood or a combination. Metal beds and metal bed frames may use steel or mixed construction. Upholstered and mixed-material beds add fabric, foam or other finishes over a structural frame. Compare the exact construction, support system, finish, published capacity, warranty and care instructions for the selected model.
What to Check Before Ordering a Bed Frame
- Room fit: Compare assembled width, depth and height with the planned footprint, normal walkways, doors, closets, windows, vents and outlets.
- Opening clearance: Leave enough room for drawers, doors, trundles, stairs and Murphy-bed mechanisms to operate fully.
- Mattress support: Confirm the required slats, deck, center support, foundation or box spring and any adjustable-base compatibility.
- Sleeper suitability: Use the published capacity and manufacturer guidance for the exact size and configuration. Different sleeping surfaces may have different ratings.
- Delivery and assembly: Measure the entry, halls, stairs, landings and turns, then review cartons, included pieces, shipping method and assembly requirements.
For bunk and loft beds, follow the specified mattress size and maximum thickness so guardrails and other safety features function as designed. Children under six should not use an upper bunk, and all product labels and assembly instructions should be followed.
Bed and Bed Frame Questions
What is the difference between a bed and a bed frame?
A bed frame is the furniture that supports a mattress. Retailers may use “bed” for the frame or for a broader sleep setup, so check the product page to see which frame, support pieces, storage components or other items are included.
Does a bed frame include a mattress?
Only when the product page specifically says a mattress is included. Treat the mattress, foundation and optional storage or trundle pieces as separate unless the selected listing states otherwise.
Is a wooden bed frame better than a metal bed frame?
Neither material is automatically better for every room. Compare the complete construction, support system, dimensions, published capacity, finish, care needs and warranty rather than choosing from material alone.
Does a platform bed need a box spring?
It depends on the frame and mattress. Many platform beds support a mattress directly, while other frames require or permit a foundation. Follow both the bed manufacturer’s support specifications and the mattress manufacturer’s requirements.
What should I measure before buying a bed?
Measure the room, complete furniture footprint, opening clearance for moving parts and the full delivery route. For an elevated bed, also compare the permitted upper mattress surface with the ceiling.
