Choose a Bunk Bed for Your Room

Start with who will use the bed, the mattress sizes they need and the space you have. Then compare ladders, stairs, storage and trundle options to find a bunk bed that works for your room.

Choose a Layout

• Twin over twin: a twin mattress on both the top and bottom bunks.
• Twin over full bunk beds pair a twin upper bunk with a wider full-size bed below.
• Full over full bunk beds have room for a full-size mattress on each level.
• Queen bunk beds include queen-over-queen beds and designs with a smaller upper bunk. Check both mattress sizes when comparing beds.
• XL and queen bunk beds offer extra sleeping length. Look for Twin XL, Full XL or Queen in the bed's size options.
• Corner and L-shaped designs and triple bunk beds need room for each section of the bed as well as ladder or stair access.

Measure Your Room

Check the bed's full length, width and height, including its ladder or stairs. Leave room to climb in, walk around, and open drawers or a trundle. Check the ceiling height and nearby fans or lights, and measure doorways and stairs along the delivery route.

For example, the Bellamy Queen Bunk Bed is listed at 66 inches wide, 92 inches long and 70 inches high, with an 87-inch length without the ladder. The Bellamy Queen Bunk Bed with Stairs is listed at 66 inches wide, 107¾ inches long and 71 inches high. The stairs make a difference when planning where the bed will go.

Proper Mattress Selection

We carry memory foam, hybrid and futon mattresses in a range of thicknesses. The best choice depends on the bed you're buying and how you like your mattress to feel.

• Mattress size. Check the size for the top and bottom bunks, any included sleeping extension and any optional trundle. Twin XL and Full XL are longer than standard Twin and Full mattresses.
• Mattress thickness. Follow the recommended thickness for each bunk. The top mattress needs to sit low enough below the guardrail, while the bottom mattress affects headroom. Some beds have an adjustable lower rail, so check its position when choosing a mattress.
• Mattress support. Check whether the bed and mattress call for slats, a bunkie board or another foundation. If a board or foundation is needed, include its height when checking clearance.
• Futons and trundles. A folding futon needs a mattress made for that use. For a trundle, check both the mattress size and maximum thickness so it can slide under the bed.
• Comfort. Once you know which mattresses fit, compare materials, firmness and feel.

What's an appropriate age for a bunk bed?
