Bunk Beds
Our bunk beds range from simple twin-over-twin configurations for kids to sophisticated queen-size models for vacation rentals.
Whether you're furnishing a child's bedroom, maximizing guest room capacity, or outfitting a rental property, Totally Home Furniture offers practical sleeping solutions that strike a balance between comfort and style.
Bunk Beds for Modern Homes
Our bunk beds are tailored for modern homes, thanks to these pillars we uphold:
- Maximize Vertical Space
Floor space costs money, especially in urban areas or vacation destinations. Our bunk beds, suitable for both kids and adults, solve this problem by stacking sleeping surfaces vertically. You get two, three, or even four beds in the footprint of one.
- Versatile for Multiple Life Stages
A bunk bed purchased for young children continues to serve them when they become teenagers who need their own space but still share a room. Many families buy kids bunk beds expecting short-term use, only to discover they're still using them a decade later for visiting relatives, teen sleepovers, or even college-age kids home for summer.
- Cost-Effective Room Solutions
Buying one bunk bed costs less than purchasing two separate beds, two mattresses, two sets of bedding, and the additional furniture you'd sacrifice to fit everything. The math gets even better for vacation rental owners, where increased sleeping capacity directly impacts revenue potential.
- Underbed Storage and Trundle Options
Many of our bunk beds offer optional underbed features for added space savings. Some include two storage drawers with a cubby, while others support an XL trundle that works as an extra bed or large storage drawer. These options are available on select models and can be added at purchase.
With efficient use of space, long-term adaptability, and cost-saving benefits, our bunk beds remain a practical choice for today’s households. They blend utility with modern design, making them a perfect fit for any lifestyle.

Safety First: What Every Buyer Should Know
Age Guidelines and Recommendations
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recommends that children under 6 years old should not sleep on upper bunks. Their coordination and judgment are not yet developed enough to navigate ladders and elevated sleeping surfaces safely.
Children 6-12 can use top bunks safely when proper guardrails and mattress thickness guidelines are followed. Teenagers and adults require the same safety features but can handle bunks with fewer restrictions.
Guardrails and Safety Standards
Every top bunk needs full-length guardrails on both sides (except the entry point). The guardrails must extend at least 5 inches above the top of the mattress to prevent rolling off during sleep.
The space between guardrails and other bed components shouldn't exceed 3.5 inches to prevent entrapment. Mattress thickness matters here. An overly thick mattress reduces the effective guardrail height, creating safety risks.
Weight Capacity Matters
Every bunk bed has two critical weight ratings: per-bunk capacity and total system capacity. Don't exceed either limit.
- For kids: 200-250 pounds per bunk usually suffices
- For teens: 350-400 pounds per bunk minimum
- For adults: 400-500 pounds per bunk, with 1,000+ total system capacity
These ratings account for the bed frame, mattress, sleeper, and dynamic loads from movement. Exceeding capacity compromises structural integrity and safety.
Proper Mattress Selection
Use only mattresses specifically approved for bunk bed use. Standard mattresses may be too thick, which can reduce the effectiveness of guardrails.
Maximum mattress thickness recommendations:
- Top bunk: 6 inches (7 inches on some models)
- Bottom bunk: No restrictions, standard mattresses work fine
Measure the distance from the mattress surface to the top of the guardrail. You need at least 5 inches of clearance when the mattress is compressed under weight.

Bunk Bed FAQs
What age is safe for a top bunk?
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recommends that children be at least 6 years old before sleeping on an upper bunk. Kids under 6 lack the coordination to use ladders and elevated sleeping surfaces safely. Full-length guardrails on both sides of the top bunk are required regardless of the sleeper's age.
How much weight can a bunk bed hold?
Weight capacity depends on the model and materials. Our twin bunk beds typically support 200-400 lbs per bunk, full-size models handle 350-500 lbs, and many of our queen bunk beds support up to 800 lbs per bunk. Always check the per-bunk and total system capacity listed on the specific product page before purchasing.
Can adults sleep in bunk beds?
Yes. Our adult bunk beds, including XL and queen models, are built for adult use. Models like the Beatrice and Bellamy collections feature 800-lb-per-bunk weight capacities and queen-size mattress frames, making them popular for vacation rentals, Airbnbs, and guest bedrooms.
What underbed options are available with bunk beds?
Select bunk bed models offer underbed storage drawers with cubby or XL storage trundles. The storage drawers feature dovetail joinery and full extension glides for daily use. The XL trundles roll out to create an extra sleeping spot with a mattress, or can be used with dividers as deep storage. Both options fit beneath the bottom bunk to maximize floor space.
What is the difference between a trundle and storage drawers?
A trundle is a pull-out frame sized for a Twin XL or Full XL mattress, giving you an additional sleeping surface that tucks under the bottom bunk during the day. Storage drawers are built for organizing clothing, bedding, toys, or personal items, with smooth-glide construction for frequent access. Pick the trundle if you need extra sleeping capacity, or pick the drawers if everyday storage is the priority.
How thick should a bunk bed mattress be?
Top bunk mattresses should not exceed 6 inches (7 inches on some models) to keep guardrails effective. Bottom bunk mattresses have no standard restriction, though some models recommend staying at or under 8 inches to maintain clearance between bunks. If you're adding a trundle mattress, check the specific product listing for maximum mattress depth.
Do bunk beds come with stairs instead of ladders?
Yes. Many of our models are available with storage stairs that provide a safer, more stable way to reach the top bunk. Each step typically has a built-in drawer for extra storage. Stairs are a popular choice for younger children and for bedrooms where you want to maximize storage in every piece of furniture.
