2. What size mattress thickness will I need?

You would also need to consider how much guard or safety rail should be available. Queen Loft Bed Options
Our Theo Chestnut Queen Loft Bed with Desk offers both sleeping and study space for taller kids, teenagers, or adults. It features a spacious queen loft bed up top with an xl full length desk board down below. If more storage is needed, you can add either one or two of the 3 drawer chests under the desk board. The drawers are dovetailed and feature full extension drawer glides. They are priced separately, please see the product page for details. The Theo is constructed from solid birch in a Chestnut finish as shown, and is also available in a Lily White or Bennett Natural finish. The extender legs can be removed and the bed can be used as a standard queen if preferred. These models have an super sturdy weight capacity of 2200 lbs.

Low - Our Madeline Natural Low Loft Bed with Desk and Storage offers you storage and study space in one compact footprint. It features a low loft bed with an 800lb weight capacity that has two 3 drawer chests and a small student desk tucked neatly underneath (the full size also includes a low narrow bookcase). The lower height is great for smaller kids or rooms with low ceilings. The pieces underneath are freestanding and can be moved to accommodate different room settings. The Madeline is made of solid birch in a Natural finish as shown, and is also available in White or Chestnut. The desk can be configured with the 2 drawers on the right or left side. The existing leg extensions can be removed at a later date to make a standard size bed. Extender legs can be added to increase the height to a mid or high loft or bunk beds. Please make sure you take a look at the height requirements for the different size beds in this specialty style. They have an outstanding 2000 lbs. capacity with 16" guardrails.
