A daybed keeps a mattress ready for sleep while its back and side panels create a place to sit with pillows during the day. It can work in a bedroom, guest room or room that serves more than one purpose. Start by choosing the sleeping size, then decide whether the space underneath should hold another mattress, storage or neither.

Choose between storage and a trundle

• For everyday storage: Look for drawers, cubbies or a bookcase back. Check how many pieces are included and whether drawers need room to open toward nearby furniture.
• For another sleeping space: A compatible trundle rolls out from beneath the daybed. Allow for its full open footprint and check its mattress size, thickness limit and weight rating separately from the main bed.
• For a choice of uses: Some storage trundles have dividers so the same compartment can hold belongings instead of a mattress. That is different from a bed with separate storage drawers and a trundle mattress in use together.

Compare upholstered, wood and metal daybeds

If you want a daybed sofa look, consider the shape of the back, the mattress height and how you will arrange cushions. An upholstered frame changes the look and feel of the surround, but the mattress remains the main sitting and sleeping surface. Wood and metal designs offer other ways to suit the room, from simple back rails to shelving. A bookcase adds usable storage but can also make the frame wider. Check the fit before ordering

Mark out the frame, then leave space to get in and out, open drawers and extend any trundle. Check door swings, bedside furniture and the route through the room when the extra bed is in use. If you plan to place a daybed beneath a loft, verify the usable opening, headroom and the manufacturer's permitted layout; exterior dimensions alone do not establish compatibility.

Common daybed questions

Can a daybed be used for everyday sleeping?
Choose a frame and mattress suited to the sleeper, with the correct support system and a sufficient stated weight rating. Check the manufacturer's instructions for the exact bed and selected configuration. A daybed's appearance alone does not establish suitability for every age or sleeper.

Does the daybed and trundle use the same mattress?
They may use the same size, but their thickness limits can differ. Casey's White Kids Daybed lists an 11-inch recommended maximum for the main mattress and a 7-inch maximum for its twin trundle. Those limits belong to that model. Check each sleeping surface and confirm whether mattresses are included before ordering.

Can I add storage or a trundle later?
Ask about compatibility and availability before relying on a future add-on. An open space under a frame does not mean that any drawer or trundle will fit it.
