What Is a Full Size Loft Bed?

A full loft bed is a raised bed frame that positions the full size sleeping surface high off the floor — typically 60 to 70 inches (152 to 178 cm) above the ground for high loft models, or 40 to 55 inches (102 to 140 cm) for low loft versions. The elevated design creates usable space underneath: a built-in desk for studying or working from home, deep storage drawers, open shelving, or simply room for furniture you'd otherwise have no space for.

Unlike a bunk bed, a full loft bed has only one sleeping surface, making it the better choice when you need smart space planning for a single occupant without sacrificing the comfort of a full size mattress.

Ceiling Height & Room Requirements

Before purchasing any full loft bed, measure your ceiling height and compare it to the bed's overall height plus the required clearance above the mattress. The CPSC recommends a minimum of 30 to 36 inches (76 to 91 cm) of clearance between the top of the upper mattress and the ceiling so the sleeper can sit up safely.
